Maintenance Department

Road Superintendent

 John Servizzi Jr.

We pledge to continue the excellent services we currently provide to our residents.  We will continue to search and work to find better ways to serve Columbia Township.

STREET SERVICES

Columbia Township has 83 roads within its boundaries.  Of the 83, Hamilton County maintains 12 and the State of Ohio maintains two.  Of those remaining, 6 are private lanes and 2 are paper streets.

Township workers clean and maintain the other 61 streets.  These township streets receive several types of service that are not provided to the state, county and private streets.

Township streets receive street signs, street repairs (such as potholes and maintenance), street sweeping, tree trimming, brush and leaf pick-up and snow removal.

County and state-maintained roads are provided with brush and leaf pick- up by the township workers.

Private streets receive street sweeping, brush and leaf pick-up and snow removal on a month-to-month basis provided by resolution.

EMPLOYEE TRAINING

Every year, our insurance provider, Mariemont Insurance, reviews our performance.  The review is followed by recommendations to reduce liability risks.  In 1999, one of their recommendations was to have some type of safety training in place to help employees to recognize potential hazards.  In the period following, training has been provided to employees in the following areas:

  • Personal Protective Equipment

  • Clipper Use and Safety

  • Snowplow Safety

  • Safety Inspection and Maintenance of Playgrounds

  • OSHA Training

  • Work Zone Traffic Control

  • Snow and Ice Control Techniques

  • Anti-icing for Maintenance

  • Anatomy of a Winter Storm

  • First Aid, A Shock to the System

  • CPR

  • Commercial Vehicle Safety

  • Developing Safe Job Site Control Plans

  • Common Maintenance Problems and Causes

  • Snow Fighters…Quiet Patriots

  • Planning and Organizing Winter Operations

  • Asphalt Crack Treatment

  • Maintaining Asphalt Road; Blade Patching

  • Cave In Response

  •  Call Before You Dig Anything

This year for all of our training classes at Columbia Township, I have invited the Village of Mariemont and the Village of Fairfax maintenance employees to participate.  The group classes were very successful.

INMATE PROGRAM

With such a small department, (one man retired in 2000 and was not replaced), we utilize  temporary service employees to supplement the staff to complete required work.  In 2002, the Department implemented the Inmate Program to help lower the cost of temporary services. The Inmate Program allows the Department to have extra "employees" at no cost to the Township. If you consider what it would  cost to hire a temporary service employee, the Inmate Program saved the Township a total of $28,896.00 for the year 2002.

As we strive to improve services to township residents, I am continually challenged to cut costs as well. By implementing the inmate program, the Township  spent very little for temporary services in the year 2002.  Temps or prisoners can assist in leaf and brush pick up, grass cutting and building and vehicle maintenance.  Skilled laborers can also assist in road repairs such as pothole patching and crack sealing.
